Bayswater, London Private Client 205 m² | 2,200 ft² 2015

Refurbishment of Central London warehouse into an open plan office.

The building, part of an old Auction warehouse, had an unusually high ceiling, but it suffered from a complete absence of natural light. An opening was therefore formed in the courtyard above, and a large sculptural roof light — formed from circular glass blocks set into unfinished concrete — allowed generous amounts of daylight into the space whilst also emphasising its distinctive industrial character.

Two walls of white painted exposed brick and a bleached oak block floor were introduced to strengthen that atmosphere, while a mezzanine level was added to provide a level of privacy for the administration team and director.

The rooms under the mezzanine were used to house the kitchen and other secondary areas, along with a meeting room that was separated from the rest of the space by a glass wall — privacy being maintained by filling the shelves with a variety of decorative objects that prevents any sense of claustrophobia while maintaining a degree of separation.

All the furniture was specially designed and built to allow maximum flexible use to be made of the room, maintaining a palette of pale grey and natural oak to minimise visual distraction; colour was provided by art pieces set into the walls, while the Shower and WC make use of coloured glass and bright flooring to enliven areas that are often overlooked.
