Red Cove
New build house overlooking the Atlantic coast
The client’s brief was to create a spacious contemporary family home that featured the best of environmental technology, took full advantage of the magnificent views, whilst minimising its visual profile by blending into the cliffside.
Following an initial tender based on use of a traditional concrete frame with blockwork, an alternative strategy was developed due to the very high costs and excessive amounts of embedded energy. It was clear that the format and layout of the house was ideally suited to a pre-fabricated Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure, and the client enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to make use of the technology which we had previously used at West Buckland School.
Following the groundworks necessary to stabilise the site, a concrete slab was cast and the entire structure was erected within 3 weeks. The wooden structure was insulated using blown fibre insulation and clad with local stone, charred timber and slate. Internal walls were finished using Cornish Clay and white oiled ash boarding.
The house is arranged around the large family room which opens directly onto a covered terrace and heated pool, with the wild Atlantic coast as a spectacular background. The back door gives access to a large boot room with ample hanging space, and a surf room with twin showers, wetsuit cleaning tanks, towel storage and a drying room.
On the first floor a landscaped terrace separates the master bedroom suite and yoga room from the guest wing, both featuring glazed corner windows offering views over the bay to the headland beyond.
