Comprehensive refurbishment and extension of 18th
C Grade II listed Lodge including outbuildings and a walled garden.
Our proposal was to join the main building to an adjacent coach house with a low level contemporary structure housing a large kitchen/dining room and a winter garden together with back-of-house spaces such as a pantry, a flower room, coat storage and cold rooms; a basement was formed under the new extension, linked to the original basement; this contained a fully equipped gun and games room, utility and plant rooms along with deep storage. The original wine cellar was reopened and refurbished, adjacent to a private wine tasting room with an open fireplace.
The building had already been owned by our client for several years when we started the project, and a number architects had developed plans for its refurbishment that were not to the client’s liking.
A second new contemporary glazed building housing a pool and spa complex was introduced into the derelict walled garden which was subsequently fully restored and replanted by Tom Stuart Smith to create a magnificent backdrop to the new leisure facilities.
The interiors of the house were meticulously designed in collaboration with Guy Goodfellow, with a new stair tower allowing the introduction of en-suite bathrooms to all major bedrooms. A number of blocked windows were re-opened to maximise views of the restored parkland landscape, whilst a previously infilled basement was discovered under the formal living room; this was excavated and turned into a library opening onto a newly formed lightwell.
