Notting Hill III
Complete refurbishment of a double fronted Victorian semi-detached house with spacious basement extension and swimming pool.
Built during the challenging Covid lockdowns, the client’s vision was to create a large family home that combined timeless elegance with a touch of ‘practical quirk', expressed through vibrant colours and distinctive architectural detailing.
A central element of the brief was a year-round, outdoor-oriented, living space, realised through a versatile multi-functional room with sweeping garden views. Fully retractable glass walls merge the interior with the exterior, connecting the kitchen, living area and garden. A covered glazed loggia provides a tranquil spot for morning coffee, capable both of being open to the rest of the ground floor in summer whilst also sheltered in winter.
A re-working of the ground floor plan allowed the combination of a series of small spaces into a full width living room with three full-height bay windows overlooking the rear garden. Carefully engineered five-metre-high sash windows maximise light and, when raised into the upper wall cavity, provide unobstructed views and direct access to a roof terrace. The design balances insulation, practicality, and elegance.
The central staircase, created with very specific tread heights and depths to suit the client’s brief, extends from the newly excavated basement to the attic floor; serving as the home’s vertical spine, it offers uninterrupted views from the basement to a central skylight, combining structural fluidity with meticulous attention to comfort.
The basement spa features a profiled timber ceiling, mirrored walls, and natural stone flooring. The swimming pool, equipped with an adjustable floor, can transition rapidly from a spacious entertainment room into a shallow pool for small children or a full scale pool for adult use.
The basement cinema, designed in collaboration with Bill Amberg Studio, SMC, and Grovecourt Joinery Ltd, is a luxurious and intimate retreat. Clad in dark lacquered Ziricote with bronze detailing, it includes bespoke green leather seating, profiled leather wall panels and a stretched fabric ceiling that unifies the room aesthetically whilst ensuring premium sound quality. Hidden within the wall panelling is a fully equipped mirrored bar, combining functionality with an atmosphere of unabashed glamour.
