Refurbishment of Victorian Terraced house with basement extension and landscaped rear garden
The original house suffered from a chaotic floor plan, a cramped entrance hall and very low ceiling heights in the lower ground floor which significantly compromised the space available for family living.
It was therefore decided to reduce levels to achieve a generous 3m headroom, to redesign the staircase which had previously intruded into the space, and to ask permission from the council to excavate under the pavement so that plant and utility spaces could be relocated from above.
The effect of the lowered floor was also to lower the garden; as this was already deeply set and surrounded by high walls, we worked with Gavin McWilliam to create a multi-tiered design that included spaces for outdoor dining and seating, with a full width green wall providing a beautifully textured view from the ground and lower ground floors.
A fully glazed office was formed within a domed conservatory room on the ground floor level to take full advantage of the garden views, and all bedrooms and bathrooms were replanned to include generous storage as maximum storage had been a key client request the height of the roof was slightly raised to allow further space for a long-term deep archive.
Walnut cabinetry in the snug was created by David Haddock whilst Bill Amberg embellished the dressing rooms with fine leatherwork, as well as creating a bespoke jewellery safe and a bronze & leather desk for the conservatory.
