Harrods

Harrods

Knightsbridge, London Harrods 1,510 m² | 16,260 ft² 2018

Creation of a new Fine Watch department.

Conceived as a retail environment to reflect the luxury and craft of watchmaking, the expanded watch department now occupies two floors of Harrods. The space features a sweeping, marble-lined staircase beneath a vaulted ceiling, with leather lined walls, a custom designed terrazzo floor and fine bronze detailing throughout.

The face of the curved central staircase is crafted from a single block of Cipollino Tirreno, a marble with a strong and dramatic character, whose book-matched slabs were honed into a gentle continuous curve along the full 17m length of the wall.

The floors of the gallery and lower foyer are laid in bespoke Terrazzo slabs, created by an Italian specialist with iridescent mother of pearl fragments used to enliven the pale cream background. Inlaid bronze strips are designed to echo the detailing on a watch face, whilst the famous ‘H’ of the Harrods logo is inlaid on the lower level.

The balustrades of the staircase and balcony are formed from patinated bronze, topped by handrails clad in leather and shaped to resemble a leather watch strap. Both the staircase handrails and the pale leather walls that run throughout the department were created in collaboration with Bill Amberg.

The calm and elegant atmosphere produced by the use of soft and high-quality materials helps dampen the acoustic resonance of the rooms and establishes a sense of unhurried luxury that turns shopping into a genuinely enjoyable leisure activity.
