This 1,500 sq foot Victorian mews house was acquired with a disorganised layout which resulted in large amounts of wasted space. The new design was developed to ensure that the mews frontage was respected whilst installing a totally new internal structure. This new structural clarity has enabled the house to meet the clients brief which was for a four bedroom house with an open-plan, bright and spacious living room.
Unusually the building is entered on the first floor which provides accomodation for three bedrooms and associated bathrooms. The master bedroom suite is located on the ground floor and the entertaining and living space is on the second floor which can take advantage of the best light and views.
The design of the staircase and lightwells ensure that light penetrates right down into the ground floor. The ground floor bedroom is separated from the street frontage with a specially glazed screen and fixed furniture. These have been designed to allow oblique views of the mews and the sky while preventing any possibility of direct views of the interior from the street.
