Creation of three new large Country Houses in the Oxfordshire Countryside
Anyhoe Park is a Grade 1 listed Country house, set in grounds designed by Humphry Repton and Capability Brown. Originally built in the seventeenth century it was later remodelled by Sir John Soane who introduced numerous of his signature features including a grand staircase and dramatic skylights.
The owner of the Park commissioned three new substantial houses to be built in the grounds with a brief to develop a contemporary classic design that built on Soane’s heritage without any recourse to pastiche. The philosophy underlying Soane’s designs, and the layout of traditional English country houses in general, was carefully analysed, and a design was developed making use of the traditional Butterfly or “double sun trap” plan last popularised in 1930’s by Edward Lutyens.
The houses make use of the latest advancements in window technology, insulation and mechanical services to ensure that they are practical and well suited to family living. The front door is well sheltered and opens into a double height hallway with an open fire and dramatic staircase. Leading from one side of the hallway the Private Wing includes a family playroom and an open plan kitchen/dining room with wide views over the estate, while on the other side the Entertainment Wing includes a large living room and study/dining room. All rooms are generously connected to allow the size and space of the house to be appreciated, while the design ensures that spaces can also be closed down in the winter to allow the large log fires to create a warm and homely atmosphere.
Behind the family wing a back door leads to a rear hallway with a large boot room, utility spaces, pantry and wine store – all with direct access to the garages and staff quarters. Upstairs the mater bedroom suite has two bathrooms and a large dressing area while four further bedrooms all have ensuite bathrooms and dressing areas. A secret door leads further up to a rooftop pavilion with a fire pit, hot tub and small kitchenette for evenings overlooking the Capability Brown landscape.
